60 Cinema Statistics on Revenue, Attendance and Film Markets

Cinema is measured through several different lenses: box-office revenue, ticket admissions, unique attendees, film production, market share and premium-format use. The figures below span pandemic-affected 2021 global data, 2022 European market-structure estimates, 2023 European recovery data, 2024 South Korean results and UNESCO’s 2015 production reference year.

Global Cinema Market Size and Box-Office Revenue

The Motion Picture Association’s 2021 THEME Report recorded a worldwide theatrical box office of $21.3 billion, an 81% increase from 2020. The report cautions that pandemic-era closures and reopenings affected the result and that international estimates may be revised.

Regional results show different recovery patterns. Asia Pacific reached $10.9 billion, up 89% from 2020, while EMEA reached $5.0 billion, up 53%, and Latin America reached $0.9 billion, up 72%; all are measured in U.S. dollars, so exchange rates affect local-currency comparisons.

2021 THEME Report

European cinema later recorded an estimated €6.7 billion in gross box office in 2023 across wider Europe, up 22.3% from €5.5 billion in 2022. The European Audiovisual Observatory defines wider Europe here as Council of Europe member states except Azerbaijan; its figure is an estimate based on FOCUS market data.

GBO in Europe up to EUR 6.7 billion in 2023, cinema attendance reached 861 million tickets sold

The EU27 plus United Kingdom recorded an estimated €6.2 billion in 2023, up 22.1% year over year. This narrower regional series is also an Observatory estimate and should not be read as directly interchangeable with the worldwide dollar figures.

Cinema Attendance and Audience Participation

Wider European cinema attendance exceeded 861 million tickets in 2023, an 18.3% increase from 2022. Those admissions represented 77.3% of the 2017–2019 average of 1.1 billion tickets, and admissions count transactions rather than unique people.

GBO in Europe up to EUR 6.7 billion in 2023, cinema attendance reached 861 million tickets sold

The EU27 plus United Kingdom sold 784 million tickets in 2023, up 19.6% from 2022 but still 20.1% below its pre-pandemic average of 982 million tickets. The baseline is a regional average for 2017–2019, not a count of unique attendees.

European market 2023 tickets sold
France 180.8 million
United Kingdom 123.6 million
Germany 95.7 million
Spain 76.2 million

The 2021 U.S./Canada market recorded 470 million admissions, double the 2020 level. An estimated 168 million people, or 47% of the population, went to the cinema at least once, a person-level survey measure that is distinct from total admissions.

2021 THEME Report

Frequent moviegoers—defined as attending at least monthly—numbered 12 million, or 3% of the U.S./Canada population, yet accounted for 34% of tickets sold in 2021. This concentration shows why person-level participation and ticket volume answer different questions.

South Korea recorded 123.13 million admissions in 2024, down 1.6% from 2023, according to the Korean Film Council’s integrated ticketing network. The figure is a count of ticket transactions, not unique viewers.

Film Production and Theatrical Supply Data

Wider European film production reached 2,347 titles in 2023, the second-highest level after 2019. European cinemas screened 13,796 feature-film titles that year; screened titles are not the same as screenings, admissions or hours of content.

GBO in Europe up to EUR 6.7 billion in 2023, cinema attendance reached 861 million tickets sold

Only 14 feature films screened in Europe in 2023 exceeded 10 million tickets sold. A further 113 titles exceeded 1 million admissions, including 39 European productions, illustrating the narrow group of films reaching very large theatrical audiences.

UNESCO’s UIS cinema release uses a 2015 reference year covering 93 countries and territories. In that dataset, developing countries accounted for 59% of global movie production; the result is a historical reference and not a current estimate.

The UIS has updated its statistics on the cinema industry

India reported 1,907 feature films in 2015. UNESCO’s series also records China’s production rising from 260 movies in 2005 to 686 in 2015, while India’s output nearly doubled from just over 1,000 films to 1,907 over the same period.

The definitions and country reporting follow the UIS dataset.

Cinema Market Share and Cultural Reach

Film origin shaped European admissions in 2023. European films accounted for 26.4% of tickets sold, while American titles reached 70.1%; these shares are based on admissions by film origin and are not revenue shares.

The Observatory’s 2022 analysis covers 28 European markets with sufficient data, estimated to represent 99% of European admissions. More than 12,000 films were registered as on release, and 96% were classified as low-grossing under categories based on annual tickets sold.

South Korea ranked ninth worldwide by theatrical box-office revenue in the cited KOFIC comparison. KOFIC notes that the comparison combines Korean won data for South Korea with PwC dollar-based data for other countries, so the ranking is not a currency-neutral comparison.

Only three foreign films in South Korea exceeded both 30 billion won in revenue and 3 million admissions in 2024. This threshold result describes the KOFIC-reported theatrical market and does not represent the entire film or home-entertainment economy.
