62 Cinema Advertising Statistics on Market Size, Audiences and Trends

Cinema advertising spans paid messages shown in movie theatres, the networks that sell that inventory, and film-promotion campaigns across other media. The statistics below separate those meanings and identify the geography, period, population and measurement basis for each figure.

The UK figures show why market-size comparisons require a definition. The Advertising Association reports a broad industry estimate, while DCM publishes its own revenue series; the two should not be combined.

Measure Period Result Scope
Advertising Association cinema advertising 2024 £158 million UK; 4,588 screens at 825 sites
DCM revenue series 2023 £117 million UK
DCM revenue series 2024 £118.5 million UK

The Advertising Association’s Advertising Pays 2025 reports £158 million in UK cinema advertising across 4,588 screens and 825 sites in 2024. DCM’s series reports £117 million in 2023, £118.5 million in 2024 and £132.7 million in 2025, on a different reporting basis.

Cinema also benefited from seasonal advertising demand. UK cinema spend was 24.2% higher year over year during the 2024 Christmas season, a seasonal comparison rather than a full-year growth rate.

For wider context, the UK advertising market grew 10.4% to £42.6 billion in 2024, with real growth of 7.6% after inflation. Those figures describe all UK advertising, not cinema alone.

Cinema Advertising Audiences, Admissions and Regional Reach

Admissions and attendances count visits or attendance events. They are not deduplicated people, verified advertising impressions or completed views.

UK cinema admissions rose from 123,618,878 in 2023 to 126,514,785 in 2024, a reported 2.3% increase. The UK Cinema Association also reports 117 million admissions in 2023 compared with 176 million in 2019, with the earlier figures rounded to millions.

UK audience measure Period Result Definition
Cinema admissions 2023 123,618,878 Visits
Cinema admissions 2024 126,514,785 Visits
Admissions change 2024 vs 2023 2.3% Year-over-year comparison
Adults visiting annually 2023/2024 report measure 70% UK adults; survey measure

The Advertising Association reports that 70% of UK adults were cinemagoers who visited at least once a year. That annual visitation measure does not establish visit frequency or unique advertising reach.

The same report records community-related attitudes: 63% of UK adults said their cinema contributes to pride in their local area, while 85% of UK cinemagoers said cinema is an important contributor to their local community. These are survey and attitudinal measures, not causal advertising outcomes.

Regional shares in the 2024 UK breakdown were:

  • London: 22.8% of UK cinema admissions.
  • Central ITV region: 12.0%.
  • Meridian ITV region: 11.4%.
  • Granada ITV region: 11.1%.
  • Yorkshire: 9.0%.
  • Anglia: 7.6%.

These are ITV-region shares of admissions, not population penetration.

Cinema Advertising Inventory, Screens and Audience Delivery

National CineMedia provides a U.S. network view of inventory and delivery. Its fiscal 2024 network recorded 390.7 million theater attendances, compared with 438.9 million in fiscal 2023, using the company’s network definition.

NCM network measure 2023 2024 Period-end or basis
Total screens 18,403 18,028 Fiscal year end
ESA Party screens 9,573 9,455 Fiscal year end
Theater attendances 438.9 million 390.7 million Fiscal year
Average screens per theater — 12.8 2024 network average

At December 26, 2024, NCM reported 18,028 total screens, including 9,455 ESA Party screens. The corresponding December 28, 2023 counts were 18,403 total screens and 9,573 ESA Party screens.

NCM estimated that its 2024 network represented 67.6% of attendance in theaters carrying cinema advertising in the top 10 U.S. DMAs, 62.9% in the top 25 DMAs, and 60.2% in the top 50 DMAs. The denominator is advertising-carrying theaters, not all U.S. theater attendance.

The company also estimated coverage of 54.5% of all U.S. DMAs. That is geographic coverage, not audience reach or impressions.

NCM reported 21,674 aggregate annual attendances per network screen in 2024. This is a company-reported derived measure and does not represent unique viewers or ad impressions.

Format availability matters for planning. At December 26, 2024, approximately 65% of NCM’s network used The Noovie Show format with post-showtime inventory, while the remaining 35% presented The Noovie Show without post-showtime advertising inventory; these are network shares by format, not shares of impressions or revenue.

Film-Promotion Advertising Spend in Cinema and Other Media

Film-promotion spending is related to cinema advertising but is not the whole cinema advertising market. France’s CNC reports gross media investment by distributors, including cinema, television and other media.

In Q4 2024, French distributors invested €122 million across media to promote 170 films. Cinema was the leading medium, receiving €61 million, up 8% year over year.

France film-promotion measure Period Result
Total media investment Q1 2024 €90 million for 166 films
Cinema investment Q1 2024 €39 million; down 14% year over year
Total media investment Q2 2024 €95 million for 158 films
Cinema investment Q2 2024 €44 million; down 7% year over year

Cinema investment Q4 2024 €61 million; up 8% year over year

The Q4 CNC comparison with television shows a different promotional mix. Nineteen percent of films promoted across media were advertised on television, equal to 33 films, and television promotion totaled €9 million, down 29% year over year.

Average Q4 2024 television investment for the promoted-film television subset was €267,000 per film, down 12% year over year. This is not a cinema advertising price.

French films represented 61% of films promoted across media but 29% of spots in Q4 2024. They received 49% of television investment for film promotion, measures that describe composition within the CNC television and film-promotion data.

NCM’s company accounts show how network revenue categories can differ from attendance and screen counts. Total revenue was $240.8 million in fiscal 2024, down 7.3% from $259.8 million in fiscal 2023.

NCM revenue category Fiscal 2024
Total revenue $240.8 million
National advertising revenue $188.0 million
Local and regional advertising revenue $39.1 million
ESA Party beverage-concessionaire advertising revenue $13.7 million
Adjusted OIBDA $45.7 million
Operating expenses $260.3 million

National advertising revenue decreased 1.1% from $190.1 million in 2023 to $188.0 million in 2024 in NCM’s comparable operating discussion. The company said the change was primarily tied to an 11.0% attendance decrease and partly offset by 10.2% higher utilization.

Local and regional advertising revenue decreased 23.5% from $51.1 million to $39.1 million on the company’s comparable operating discussion. NCM attributed the decline to lower contract activity and average contract size, as well as lower attendance.

Adjusted OIBDA was $45.7 million in 2024, compared with $52.7 million in 2023. Operating expenses were $260.3 million, up 35.2% from $192.5 million, although NCM notes that 2023 comparability is affected by deconsolidation and reconsolidation of NCM LLC.

Cinema Advertising Forecasts, Formats and Measured Market Context

Forecasts are forward-looking estimates, not realized outcomes. AA/WARC forecast UK cinema advertising growth of 7.1% in 2025, alongside a forecast UK advertising market of £45.2 billion, up 6.3%.

For 2026, AA/WARC forecast the total UK advertising market at £47.8 billion after 5.6% growth. The total-market forecasts are context measures and are not cinema-only.

DCM forecasts 140 million UK industry admissions in 2026 and £139.3 million in UK cinema advertising revenue in its revenue series. Admissions remain visits rather than unique people.

Operational measures help describe the buying environment, but they are not universal market prices. DCM reports an average cinema advertising reel length of 11 minutes on its current page measure accessed in 2026.

DCM also lists rate-card spot premiums on the chosen buying route: 15% for Bronze, 30% for Silver and 60% for Gold. These are DCM rate-card premiums, not market-wide cinema advertising prices.
