59 Movie Streaming Statistics: Subscribers, Viewing, Revenue and Piracy

Movie streaming has become a global distribution system measured through memberships, subscriber revenue, viewing time, content costs and site traffic. The figures below cover complete streaming services and named illegal services, so they describe the wider movie-streaming environment rather than movie-only audiences in every case.

Global Movie Streaming Platform Scale and Paid Memberships

Netflix’s reported streaming membership series shows continued expansion from late 2022 through 2023. These are company-reported memberships, not unique people and not movie-only accounts; the service includes series, films and other programming.

Netflix period Global paid memberships
Q4 2022 230.75 million
Q1 2023 232.50 million
Q2 2023 238.39 million
Q3 2023 247.15 million
Q4 2023 260.28 million

Netflix added 13.12 million paid memberships in Q4 2023 and reported 12.8% year-over-year membership growth for that quarter. Its Q4 2023 revenue was $8.833 billion, while full-year 2023 free cash flow was $6.9 billion; both financial figures cover the total company rather than movie streaming alone.

In its Q3 2024 shareholder letter, Netflix described its audience as more than 600 million people globally. That estimate is a different measure from paid memberships, and paid sharing affected account viewing in the company’s engagement discussion.

Movie Streaming Statistics by Region: Revenue and Average Revenue

Netflix’s Q2 2024 regional table shows how memberships and revenue varied across four reporting territories. The figures include all Netflix content and use the company’s average-revenue-per-membership measure rather than posted consumer list prices.

Region, Q2 2024 Paid memberships Revenue Average revenue per membership/month
United States and Canada 84.11 million $4.296 billion $17.17
Europe, Middle East and Africa 93.96 million $3.008 billion $10.80
Latin America 49.25 million $1.204 billion $8.28
Asia-Pacific 50.32 million $1.052 billion $7.17

EMEA had the largest reported membership base among the four regions in this quarter, while UCAN had the highest reported revenue and average revenue per membership. These comparisons should be read as company reporting categories, not as estimates of all movie-streaming subscriptions in each geography.

Movie Streaming Viewing Time, Engagement and Audience Reach

Netflix reported around two hours of viewing per day per paid membership on average in Q3 2024. The estimate covers series and films rather than movies alone, and the company noted that paid sharing affected account viewing.

Netflix also said its service represented just under 10% of TV time in the Q3 2024 viewing context. The company reported that its titles generated more Nielsen Top 10 view hours than all other streamers combined through Q3 2024, but that comparison includes both series and films and is presented as Netflix’s summary of Nielsen data.

Engagement outcomes can also be measured through industry recognition. Netflix titles received 107 Primetime Emmy nominations and 24 wins in the 2024 awards cycle, while Netflix said view hours for owner households rose year over year in the first three quarters of 2024; the cited passage did not quantify that increase.

Disney+ and Hulu Movie Streaming Economics

Disney’s fiscal 2024 reporting separates average revenue by service and subscriber grouping. These are company-defined averages, not necessarily consumer list prices, and Disney’s fiscal calendar differs from a calendar-year reporting period.

Service or grouping, fiscal 2024 Average monthly revenue per paid subscriber
Disney+ domestic, United States and Canada $7.89
Disney+ international, excluding Disney+ Hotstar $6.60
Disney+ Core $7.18
Disney+ Hotstar $0.96
Hulu SVOD only $12.35
Hulu Live TV + SVOD $95.12

Hulu Live TV + SVOD is a hybrid live-television and streaming product, so its $95.12 average should not be compared with SVOD-only prices as though the products were identical. Disney+ Hotstar is also a distinct regional service and is not directly comparable with domestic Disney+ pricing.

Content economics were substantial in the same fiscal year. Disney+ and other programming and production costs were $5.499 billion, while Hulu programming and production costs were $8.582 billion; both categories include programming beyond movies.

Disney’s direct-to-consumer operating income was $143 million in fiscal 2024, and its operating results improved by $2.639 billion from fiscal 2023 to fiscal 2024. The segment result includes Disney+, Hulu and other direct-to-consumer activity rather than a movie-specific profit measure.

Paramount+ Subscriber and Revenue Statistics

Paramount+ reported subscriber and revenue growth between 2023 and 2024. Its subscriber definition includes paid subscriptions, free-trial registrants and certain bundled or third-party access, so the totals are not directly comparable with every competitor’s paid-only measure.

Paramount+ measure 2023 2024
Global subscribers at year-end 67.5 million 77.5 million
Global revenue $4.446 billion $5.896 billion

Paramount+ global subscribers increased by 10.0 million, or 15%, from 2023 to 2024. Global revenue increased by $1.450 billion, or 33%, over the same period.

The quarterly pattern was also notable at the end of the year. Paramount+ added 5.6 million subscribers in Q4 2024, reaching 77.5 million, and subscribers increased 8% from Q3 2024.

Illegal Movie Streaming and Piracy Traffic Statistics

The Motion Picture Association’s market context is broader than streaming movies alone. It reported that the combined global theatrical and home/mobile entertainment market reached $99.7 billion in 2021, growing 24% from 2020; home/mobile included digital and physical entertainment.

The MPA also cited illegal streaming subscriptions costing $10 to $20 per month in its 2022 address. One Florida illegal streaming service attracted 200,000 visits per month before shutdown and had as many as 50,000 active paid subscribers, according to the address; these were service-level figures, not sector totals.

Later MPA remarks reported traffic for named illegal services before shutdown:

  • FMovies received more than 160 million visits per month, according to the MPA.
  • Shahed4U alone had 155 million monthly visits.
  • Streamzz logged more than 7 million monthly visits across the United States and Europe.
  • Atomo-HD drew almost 10 million monthly visits from Europe and the United States.
  • Tirexo and Zone-Telechargement had combined traffic of 31 million monthly visits in France and French-speaking countries.

These are MPA-reported traffic or service-level estimates for named illegal sites. Visits are not unique people, and they do not estimate piracy prevalence among all movie viewers; ACE had nearly 60 members worldwide in 2024, but coalition membership is not a consumption measure.
