IMAX Global Network Statistics and Market Penetration

IMAX estimated the worldwide commercial multiplex addressable market at 3,619 locations on December 31, 2024. That is a company estimate rather than an independent census, while the reported network contained 1,735 operating systems and represented 48% penetration based on the company’s own estimate. IMAX Corporation Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2024

The commercial network increased from 1,693 locations at the end of 2023 to 1,735 at the end of 2024. The company says period-to-period changes are net of permanently closed locations, so this is a net location comparison rather than a count of every installation activity.

Network measure Period Result Scope
Operating systems Dec. 31, 2024 1,735 Worldwide
Addressable market Dec. 31, 2024 3,619 locations Worldwide commercial multiplex estimate
Penetration Dec. 31, 2024 48% Company-defined addressable market
Commercial network Dec. 31, 2023 1,693 locations Worldwide
Commercial network Dec. 31, 2024 1,735 locations Worldwide

International markets accounted for 76% of IMAX systems in both 2024 and 2023. In the company’s definition, international means every country outside the United States and Canada, which matters when comparing this share with other geographic reporting.

IMAX also reported 265 connected locations configured for live and interactive events at December 31, 2024, spanning the United States, Canada, Europe, Africa, Australia and Asia. During 2024, live-streaming technology delivered events to an additional 166 locations worldwide; these additional event locations may overlap with other network categories over time.

A 2024 League of Legends world-championship livestream reached more than 150 locations in China and South Korea, with average attendance capacity above 90%. Capacity is not the same as tickets sold or unique attendees.

IMAX says films using its exclusive 1.43:1 film framing can provide up to 67% more image in select locations. This is a maximum for compatible films and select venues, not a result that applies to every IMAX screening.

IMAX Regional Statistics: Locations and Commercial Arrangements

The 2024 regional network shows the largest concentration in Greater China, using IMAX’s definition of China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau. The table also separates the United States and Canada, Asia excluding Greater China, Western Europe, Latin America and the company’s residual rest-of-world category.

Region Commercial multiplex locations Measurement date
Greater China 796 Dec. 31, 2024
United States and Canada 414 Dec. 31, 2024
Asia excluding Greater China 185 Dec. 31, 2024
Rest of world 143 Dec. 31, 2024
Western Europe 135 Dec. 31, 2024
Latin America 62 Dec. 31, 2024
International total 1,321 Dec. 31, 2024

Latin America includes South America, Central America and Mexico. “Rest of world” is a residual company geographic category, while international excludes the United States and Canada.

All regional counts are commercial multiplex locations. IMAX Corporation Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2024

Domestic locations increased from 405 in 2023 to 414 in 2024. The company reports these changes net of permanently closed systems, and “domestic” here refers to the company-reported United States and Canada grouping for this network table.

IMAX also classifies locations by commercial arrangement. These are contract categories, not different audience populations or venue formats.

Commercial arrangement Worldwide locations in 2024 Greater China locations in 2024
Traditional JRSA 771 385
Hybrid JRSA 126 105
Sales arrangements 838 306

Sales arrangements include sales, hybrid sales and sales-type lease deal types. At December 31, 2024, IMAX reported 897 locations under JRSAs in its global commercial multiplex network, a subset defined by the company’s arrangement terms. IMAX Corporation Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2024

IMAX reported $1.28 billion in global box office in 2025, the company’s highest ever. The result was 40% above 2024 and 13% above the previous record set in 2019; those comparisons reflect different release slates and network sizes. IMAX Closes Out Best Year in its History with Record $1.28 Billion at the Global Box Office in 2025

2025 box-office measure Result Geography or definition
Global gross box office $1.28 billion Worldwide IMAX network
Global market share 3.8% Company-defined worldwide theatrical market

Domestic gross box office $449 million Company-reported domestic market
Rest-of-world international gross box office $427 million Excludes domestic and China categories
China gross box office $407 million China

IMAX’s 2025 global market share increased by 70 basis points year over year. The local-language result was 65% above the previous full-year record set in 2023, and local-language classification is company-reported.

The domestic, rest-of-world international and China figures are separate company-reported geographic categories. They should not be reinterpreted as a universal national accounting system, and gross box office is not the same as IMAX Corporation revenue.

IMAX released 122 new titles worldwide in 2025, its largest slate in company history under the company’s release-count definition. The figure measures titles in the worldwide slate, not tickets sold or the number of venues showing every title.

IMAX Systems, Backlog and Balance-Sheet Statistics

IMAX installed 160 systems worldwide in 2025, up from 146 in 2024. Of the 2025 installations, 82 were under sales arrangements and 98 were new locations; the new-location count differs from total installations because installations include upgrades. IMAX Corporation Reports Fourth Quarter and Full Year 2025 Results

The company ended 2025 with a backlog of 434 systems, an order/backlog measure rather than completed installations. Its commercial network reached 1,796 locations at December 31, 2025, compared with 1,735 at December 31, 2024.

At December 31, 2024, the JRSA backlog contained 276 systems: 202 for new locations and 74 upgrades. This JRSA backlog is a subset of total system backlog, so it should not be substituted for the 2025 total backlog figure.
