57 Physical Media Statistics on Music, Home Video and Streaming

Physical media spans distinct markets, so its statistics must be read by format, geography and measurement basis. The figures below cover U.S. recorded music and home-video sell-through plus UK recorded music, with shipment value, consumer spending, units and consumption shares kept separate.

U.S. Physical Music Statistics and Recent Direction

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) measures U.S. recorded-music physical products through retail-dollar shipment value. Its physical category includes CDs, LP/EP, music video and other physical formats; shipment value is not the same as a household survey of purchases.

U.S. recorded-music measure 2023 2024
Physical revenue US$1.9120 billion US$2.0145 billion
Physical units shipped 77.1 million 78.7 million
Share of shipment mix 11% 12%

Physical music revenue increased 5.4% in 2024, while physical units rose from 77.1 million to 78.7 million. The RIAA shipment mix therefore moved one percentage point toward physical formats, although digital formats still represented 88% of the 2024 mix.

The RIAA reported an average of 100.0 million paid on-demand music subscriptions in the United States in 2024, compared with 96.8 million in 2023. This is a comparator rather than a physical-media measure: limited-tier services are excluded, and multi-user plans count as one subscription.

U.S. Vinyl and CD Statistics

Vinyl supplied most of the value inside the U.S. physical music category in 2024, while CDs remained a substantial unit format.

Format or category 2024 units 2024 revenue 2024 direction
Vinyl LP/EP 43.6 million US$1.4429 billion Revenue up 6.9%
CD 32.9 million US$541.1 million Revenue up 0.7%
Music video 0.4 million US$8.9 million Units down from 0.6 million; revenue down 17.1%
Other physical 1.8 million US$21.7 million Units up from 0.9 million; revenue up 54.5%

Vinyl LP/EP shipments reached 43.6 million units and revenue reached US$1.4429 billion in 2024. The RIAA’s rounded narrative summary says vinyl albums outsold CDs for the third consecutive year, at 44 million versus 33 million units; those rounded figures differ slightly from the detailed table.

CD shipments were 32.9 million units in 2024, up from 32.4 million in 2023. CD revenue was US$541.1 million, up 0.7% year over year.

The smaller categories moved in different directions. Music-video physical shipments fell from 0.6 million to 0.4 million units, while “other physical”—including CD singles, cassettes, vinyl singles, DVD Audio and SACD—rose from 0.9 million to 1.8 million units.

UK figures from the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) use Official Charts purchase data for many unit measures and BPI revenue analysis for market values. They describe UK recorded music, not global physical media.

UK physical music measure 2024 result Comparison
Physical album sales — Up 1.4%; first annual rise since 1994
Vinyl purchases 6.7 million Up 9.1%; 17th consecutive annual rise
CD purchases 10.5 million Down 2.9%
Physical-format revenue £246.5 million Up 1.3%
Vinyl-LP revenue £145.7 million Up 2.9%
CD revenue £96.7 million Down 0.5%

The UK recorded a 1.4% increase in physical album sales in 2024, the first year-on-year increase since 1994. Vinyl purchases rose 9.1% to 6.7 million units, extending the format’s annual growth streak to 17 years, while CD purchases fell 2.9% to 10.5 million.

Revenue shows a more mixed but resilient physical market. UK physical-format revenue rose 1.3% to £246.5 million in 2024 after rising 12.8% in 2023; vinyl-LP revenue grew from £19.4 million in 2014 to £145.7 million in 2024, an increase of more than 650%, using nominal, non-inflation-adjusted values.

CD unit sales declined 6.9% in 2023 and 19.4% in 2022, but CD revenue fell only 0.5% to £96.7 million in 2024 and remained above £90 million annually across the three years through 2024. These are different measures: unit change does not translate directly into revenue change.

Physical Home-Video Spending Statistics

DEG’s U.S. home-entertainment figures measure consumer sell-through spending on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD. The 2024 figures are preliminary and compiled from member, source and retail/platform inputs; DEG states that it did not independently check or verify all information.

U.S. physical home-video period Spending Year-over-year change
2023 full year US$1,252.43 million —
Q1 2024 US$233.24 million Down 15.24%
Q2 2024 US$218.16 million Down 28.46%
Q3 2024 US$215.05 million Down 25.69%
Q4 2024 US$293.14 million Down 23.44%
2024 full year US$959.59 million Down 23.38%

U.S. physical home-video spending declined in every reported quarter of 2024. Full-year spending was US$959.59 million, compared with US$1,252.43 million in 2023; DEG’s rounded narrative described both full-year and Q4 declines as 23.4%.

The 4K UHD catalog was described as stable with 2023 in DEG’s 2024 summary, but the report did not provide a dollar value for that direction. It should therefore be treated as measured qualitative context rather than a quantified 4K UHD result.

Physical Media Versus Streaming Statistics

Physical and streaming figures measure different forms of market activity. RIAA reports recorded-music shipment value and subscriptions, while DEG reports U.S. home-entertainment spending; neither set measures the share of households that own or use discs.

U.S. 2024 comparison Measure Result
Recorded music physical Share of shipment mix 12%
Recorded music streaming Revenue US$14.8777 billion
Paid-subscription streaming Revenue US$10.6870 billion
Home entertainment physical video Spending US$959.59 million
Home entertainment subscription streaming Spending US$52.19627 billion
Total home entertainment Spending US$57.16632 billion

U.S. recorded-music streaming revenue reached US$14.8777 billion in 2024, up 3.6%, while paid-subscription streaming revenue reached US$10.6870 billion, up 5.3%. Digital download revenue was US$369.7 million, down 14.9%, showing that digital ownership is itself distinct from subscription access.

In home entertainment, subscription streaming spending reached US$52.19627 billion, up 25.30%, and total spending reached US$57.16632 billion, up 21.02%. Subscription streaming represented 91.3% of that total; DEG’s displayed figures also imply physical home video was about 1.7%, a derived share based on rounded preliminary values rather than a directly reported statistic.

DEG reported US$4.01046 billion in digital transactions excluding subscription streaming, combining US$2.36928 billion in electronic sell-through and US$1.64118 billion in video-on-demand spending. These categories include digital transactions and are not physical media.

Physical Media Releases, Catalog Demand and Market Caveats

The UK rankings indicate that current releases remained important in 2024, even as physical media is often discussed through older catalog titles. These are ranked-title observations, not estimates of the entire market.

  • Seven of the UK’s 10 biggest-selling vinyl LPs in 2024 were released in 2024.
  • Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department sold more than 111,000 UK vinyl LPs in 2024.
  • All but one of the UK’s 20 biggest-selling CDs in 2024 were released in 2024 or 2023.
  • All 10 of the UK’s top CD sellers in 2024 were current releases.
  • Six of the UK’s 10 top CD sellers in 2024 were by British artists.
  • The top two UK CDs in 2024 sold more than 400,000 copies combined.
  • Coldplay’s Moon Music sold 182,166 copies in its UK release week in October 2024.
  • Eight of the UK’s 2024 year-end top 10 sellers were current releases, compared with five catalog titles in the 2014 top 10.

For broader context, UK recorded-music consumption rose 9.7% to 200.5 million album-equivalents in 2024. Streaming represented 88.8% of UK recorded-music consumption in 2024, compared with 87.7% in 2023; these are consumption measures, not physical ownership or revenue shares.

The evidence covers two separate physical-media submarkets: recorded music and U.S. home-video sell-through. RIAA retail shipment value, BPI unit and revenue measures, DEG consumer spending, album-equivalents and subscription counts should not be combined into a single physical-media total.
